May 2006 - Plane Trucking

Regular Sunday morning devotees of the M25 and M11 may have been surprised recently to see 2 extremely large Hercules C130 aircraft fuselages being transported by road by Hallett Silbermann.  Travelling from Tilbury Docks to Cambridge, the 2 aircraft were part way through a long journey having arrived in the UK by ship from the USA . At Cambridge, after comprehensive refurbishment, the aeroplanes will be re-assembled and then flown out of the UK to end user the Royal Netherlands Air Force.

Each aeroplane needed a convoy of 6 heavy haulage tractors and trailers. The largest piece – the fuselage – travelled under a special Highways Agency VR1 permission at some 103 feet in length and almost 17 feet in width. Motorway roadworks were re-aligned to allow the large loaded vehicles to safely reach their destination in Cambridge.

Using a specially adapted beam trailer Hallett Silbermann were able to achieve a substantial saving for their client avoiding the need to follow a protracted and torturous high load route which would have increased the cost of these complicated movements significantly.

This is a good example of Hallett Silbermann’s extensive fleet of equipment and their comprehensive specialist skills being utilised as part of a major logistical project, and at the same time saving the customer a considerable sum of money.
