With effect from 1st January 2004 the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) has decided to withdraw from providing police escorts for the majority of abnormal loads in most counties of England and Wales.
In future, following receipt of an Abnormal Load notification the Police will decide whether in their opinion a 'private escort' is required. If so, the haulier will be expected to provide an escort that complies fully with a draft Code of Practice that was issued by the Highways Agency on 8th December 2003. Unfortunately, despite some 15 years of discussion, this change of policy has been introduced at very short notice and without the Highways Agency Code of Practice being finalised.
In order to meet our responsibilities under Road Traffic and Health & Safety legislation, Hallett Silbermann have purchased, liveried and equipped an escort vehicle, which is now fully operational.
This escort facility is available to all customers - including other hauliers - and will ensure that this new role will be handled with the utmost care and professionalism for which Hallett Silbermann is renowned.
